With Part Four out today, Bastille frontman Dan Smith wraps up his ambitious storytelling project & (Ampersand) - a genre-blurring, emotionally rich series of EPs that has quietly evolved into one of the most innovative releases of the year.

Across its four parts, Smith has created a world where poets, mythological figures, scientists, and outsiders collide in hushed, cinematic soundscapes. Part Four continues that tradition with four new tracks, each pairing compelling characters with haunting melodies and surprising perspectives. “Bonnie & Clyde” reimagines the infamous lovers with a modern, outlaw twist. “Bathsheba & Him” dives into biblical power and female agency. “My Head & The Glass” leans inward, meditating on mental noise and fragility. And “Bored & Overboard (Pandora’s Box)” wraps vulnerability and myth into one confessional punch.

The release also features four bonus live recordings from Smith’s Turner Gallery sessions with ARTE, where strings, silence, and raw vocals turn tracks like “Leonard & Marianne” and “Zheng Yi Sao & Questions For Her” into intimate performances that leave a mark.

Throughout &, Smith has used his songwriting not to spotlight himself, but to vanish into the lives of others, a subtle but powerful shift in a pop landscape often built on personal overshare. “It’s about finding connection through stories,” Smith has said, “even the ones we think we don’t relate to.”
